ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — United by tragedy, hundreds of crime survivors are hitting the road Monday morning, headed for the state capital to fight for change.
It’s the second annual Survivors Speak event.
This Tampa Bay group will spend the next two days in Tallahassee pushing lawmakers to make their communities safer. Each of them has witnessed horrific crimes and they plan on asking legislators for more money for services to help crime victims get the help needed to recover.
These crime survivors will also be asking for criminal justice reforms that meet the needs of Florida crime victims.
Once they get to Tallahassee they’ll link up with more than 350 other survivors fighting for the same cause. All of them are advocating for public safety measures focusing on ending the cycle of crime, making prevention a priority and getting funding for rehabilitation and trauma recovery.
Other notable survivors include victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting and survivors of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.
