Safer Michigan Act: Sign-On in Support
Michigan can support all crime survivors by making the state victim compensation system more accessible for more people in need, improving support for victims, and increasing rehabilitation for people serving time in prison. This will reduce recidivism and improve the health, safety, and well-being of crime survivors and communities across our state.

The Safer Michigan act is a package of legislation, supported by evidence and crime survivors in Michigan, that will help achieve shared safety for all by:

      •  Changing unrealistic time limits: Removing the current 48-hour time limit to file a
police report to be eligible for victim’s compensation and extend the time limit to
file an application from 1-year to 5-years.

      •  Expanding services by providing victim compensation to victims of violent crimes
          that result in psychological trauma.

      •  Expanding which expenses are covered to include relocation, transportation, home
security, childcare, vocational rehabilitation, lost tuition, accessibility equipment, and
          all funeral costs including gravestones.

      •  Increase victim compensation expense caps to the following amounts:
               1) Funeral burial: from $5,000 to $10,000
               2) Lost earnings/support: from $350/week to $700/week
               3) Overall cap: from $25,000 to $45,000

      •  Increasing victims’ compensation emergency awards from $500 to $5,000

      •  Expand coverage for close family members impacted by a violent crime,
including fiancés, co-parents, those standing in-loco parentis to a victim, and
          household members.

      •  Provide secure safe and stable housing protections for all survivors if the proper documentation
          is provided and approved.

      •  Increase participation in rehabilitative programming through incentives.
